UWM/MPS Special Education Internship Program
The UWM/MPS Special Education Internship Program is an innovative program that prepares speical education teachers. Post-Baccalaureate special education students work in Milwaukee Public Schools
while earning certification. All applicants must have a 4-year bachelors degree.
Successful completion of the Internship Program leads to eligibility for Wisconsin teacher certification in special education. The post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs offered with UWM Internship Program are:
Early Childhood
(Birth to age 8)
Middle Childhood
to Early Adolescence
(Ages 6-13)
Early Adolescence to Adolescence
(Ages 10-21)
Interns are learning to teach while working as a beginning teacher in MPS and taking courses in the UWM certification program. They are in a relationship with mentor teachers that is focused on helping the interns learn to be most effective in the classroom. Interns are expected by both MPS and UWM to demonstrate a very high level of time and energy commitment to making the mentoring relationship work, to fulfilling the UWM course requirements, and most importantly, to learning to meet the needs of students with disabilities in MPS.
