Hyangshim Jang Assistant Professor
Department of Educational Psychology

Hyangshim Jang's research interests revolve around motivational processes inherent in teacher-student interactions. She works intensively with teachers and students on various empirical studies focusing on ways of helping teachers enhance students' engagement and motivation to learn.

Jang is currently investigating three areas: which instructional behaviors encourage and help promote autonomous functioning in students; how students' perceptions of autonomy and competence are supported and interfered with by teachers; and how teacher-provided autonomy support and teacher-provided structure both facilitate students' learning and engagement. In doing so, Jang uses both laboratory and classroom methodologies, and she relies on quantitative data sets. Jang earned her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
